Opening Hours in Sydney

Shops

In the popular areas of Sydney shops are open every day of the week, from 9am to 5.30pm. On Thursdays, many stay open until about 9pm. However, in some large shopping centres they may open and close later, typically from 10am to 6pm or 7pm during the week and from 9am-5pm on weekends.

Some supermarkets in these centres start very early and close late at night; some even stay open around the clock.

Outside Sydney many shops open later in the morning and close on a Monday, but may open on Saturdays, and some even on Sundays.

Where to shop:

Don't miss the architectural elegance of the Queen Victoria Building in George Street(the QVB as it is known in Sydney), which, nowadays, houses local and international brands of top fashion designers, as well as catering, health and beauty, arts and antiques, jewellery and gifts, and many others outlets.

Trading Hours are Monday to Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 9am - 6pm, Thursday 9am - 9pm, Sunday 11am - 5pm.

The nearby arcades and those in Pitt Street, which runs parallel to George Street add to the choice in what is Sydney’s main shopping area.

For department stores go to David Jones, on Market and Castlereagh Streets, and to Myer on George Street; or to shopping centres such as Westfield or the Piccadilly Arcade both in Pitt Street, or the Strand Arcade on George Street.

Besides, check out the shops in Paddington, Newtown, the Bondi Junction, or Chinatown.

Tax Refund

If you are resident outside Australia, you are entitled to claim a refund of the 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST) that is added to every bill. This only applies to purchases of AUD$300 or more, in the same store or establishment. It is not possible to combine invoices from different suppliers. Each of these, should give you a Tax Invoice to be presented to Customs at the Tourist Refund Scheme desk situated in the departure lounge of the airport, when you fly out of Australia.

Do not pack the goods that you purchased in the bags that you check-in, as they must be shown to Customs along with the Tax Invoice, passport, and boarding card for the international flight. You can get more official information here.
