Santo Domingo International Airport
Arrivals and departures
Las Americas International Airport is located some 30 kilometres to the southeast of Santo Domingo city centre. It is composed of a three-level building, with Arrivals at Level 1, Departures on level 2, and catering outlets on Level 3. The building is divided into two terminals: A (South) and the newer Terminal B (North)
The hotels in the vicinity of the airport are in the area close to the Boca Chica beach. We recommend the Quality Hotel Santo Domingo, which can be booked below, directly with the Hotel. It offers a paid airport shuttle service (arrival USD 14; departure USD 7).
You could also look at Don Juan Beach Resort, which is a 3-star all inclusive resort (http://donjuanbeachresort.com/en); or the Neptuno's Refugio, another 3-star hotel in Boca Chica.
Baggage storage and wrapping facilities are available.
BanReservas branch can be found on Level 1, and is open Monday to Friday from 8.am to 7.pm.
They also have money-exchange booths opposite American Airlines in Level 2 of the South Terminal A area of Immigration and Customs.
Cash machines belonging to BanReservas, Banco Leon and Banco BHD can be found on Level 1, with BHD having one also in Level 3. ATMs can also be found in the arrival area, outside customs.
Global Exchange, operating under the name of "GLOBO CAMBIO" provides foreign exchange facilities and has five outlets at the airport. North Terminal: International Arrivals, Baggage claim area, and in the Customs area; South Terminal: International Arrivals Passport control area, International Departures, and International Arrivals Customs area. They are open 24 hours a day. It has been claimed that the exchange rates at these booths become substantially lower when the banks are closed...
In any case, it is advisable that you only exchange a small amount at the airport as needed for tips and transportation to your hotel. Later, you can compare exchange rates in banks and reputable money changers, which you can find in Santo Domingo. Besides, as you will probably arrive tired and may get confused with foreign currency it is a good idea to leave these matters for later, when you have rested and are more alert.
To get to the city there are basically two alternatives:
The cheapest method is that offered by the vans (gua-guas) that stop outside the upper level. The cost is around 70 Pesos. Some go to Santo Domingo (Parque Enriquillo) , others go to Boca Chica in the opposite direction. There are regular services and you don’t have to wait long, even on weekends. It should not take longer than a taxi as they rarely stop before the final destination, in town. You should only consider this option if you are travelling lightly, are adventurous, and on a low-budget.
SICHALA is the official authorized taxi operator for the airport. They provide cars and minibuses, which can be booked in advance. The cost for a car to central Santo Domingo is about USD 40 (USD 75 return). For groups in excess of 4 passengers they charge an extra USD5 per person. The trip, along the expressway, should take around 30 minutes in light traffic, but considerably more during the rush hour.
A pre-arranged transfer, especially if you are arriving late at night, is the most advisable option. It can be arranged between your travel agent and many of the hotels, or through SICHALA.
There is an international departure tax of USD 20, paid in American dollars for each passenger, from two years of age.
However, depending on the airline that you use, or the country of departure, this tax is often included in the price of the ticket. Please, check with the airline, travel agent, or tour operator.
