Taxi from airport: US$35; will take 20/25 minutes.
The management of Occidental Hotels has recently been taken over by the world renowned Barcelo Hotels Group, resulting in an upgrade of service, facilities, and rate guarantee. The immediate outcome is a major refurbishing of rooms which were a bit dated. On booking or on arrival ask for a room in the upgraded sections, although those may be in the more expensive Royal sections (at the time of writing, at least, buildings 15 and 20 have been renovated).
Room safes are available but you need to rent them for US$5 per day. Another charge to bear in mind, if you need it, is the access to the Internet. Other than in the Royal accommodation, where Wi-Fi is free, the cost is US$60 per week, or US$25 for 25 hours spread over 6 days; both options valid in 1 device only.
You will be delighted with the beautifully groomed gardens and the amazing beach. It is a shame that, as in all other resorts along the Bavaro coastline, you are constantly annoyed by vendors trying to sell their wares. Just ignore them with a curt and definite gesture to show your total lack of interest; or stay at the large inviting swimming pools. At least, you will be near bars, and don't have to walk for 10 minutes to get your free drinks, unlike guests in the Royal categories who have a bar on their own allocated section of the beach.
Apart from the large self-service buffet restaurant, and the others that specialize in international cuisine, the resort has a pizzeria that stays open until past midnight.
The resort does not forget the needs of children, providing a Fun Club and diverse land and water activities, and making it an ideal family-oriented destination.
